Information about cookies

What is a cookie?

What is a cookie? A cookie is a small text file that is stored by the computer when a website is visited by a user. The text stores information that the site can read when consulted a second time. Some of these cookies are necessary for the appropriate operation of the website, while others are useful to the visitor because they can safely save information such as the user name or the language setting. The advantage of having the cookies installed in one’s PC is that one no longer needs to fill out the same information each time you want to access a site that has already been visited.

Definitions

Cookies are small fragments of test (letters and/or numbers) that allow the web server to store on the client (browser) information to be reused during the same visit to the site (session cookies) or later, even after days (persistent cookies). Cookies are stored, according to user’s preferences, from single browser on the specific device being used (computer, tablet, smartphone).
Similar technologies, such as, for example, web beacons, clear GIFs and all forms of local storage introduced with HTML5, can be used to collect information on the user’s behavior and on the utilization of services.
Later in this document we will refer to all cookies and similar technologies by simply using the term “cookies”.

Types of cookies

Based on the characteristics and use of cookies, we can distinguish several categories:
Technical cookies. These cookies are essential for the appropriate running of the site and are used to manage the login and the access to reserved functions of the site. The duration of this cookies is strictly limited to the working session (they are deleted as soon as the browser is closed), except for the Wishlist where cookies of longer duration (30 days of expiration) are used with the aim to identify - during this limited period of time - the visitor's computer; this operation is performed through an alpha-numeric code that makes the user anonymous but recognizable, which is generated at the first session of access, in order to propose again the result of the choices made by the user. Their deactivation affects the use of services accessible by login. The public part of the site can be utilized in normal conditions.
Third-party cookies. These cookies are used to collect and analyze traffic and utilization of the site anonymously. They also allow the visitor to monitor the system and to improve its performance and usability. The deactivation of these cookies can be executed without any loss of functionality.
Profiling cookies. These are persistent cookies that are used to identify (anonymously and not) the user’s preferences and to improve his/her browsing experience. This site does not utilize cookies of this type.

Duration of the cookies

Some cookies (session cookies) remain active only until the user closes the browser or logs out. Other cookies "survive" to the closure of the browser and are available also for future visits. These cookies are known as persistent and the server sets their duration at the time of their creation. In some cases, a deadline is defined, in other cases, the duration is unlimited.
In this site, the information is stored exclusively for technical purposes and does not use persistent cookies.
However, surfing the pages you may interact with sites managed by third parties that can create or modify permanent cookies and profiling ones. To know the terms of use of third party cookies please refer to the "Third-party Cookies used" section.
